He also sought to symbolize the ties between the University and the city of Lubbock with a visual and formal line connecting Memorial Circle to Broadway. Seventy-five years later, Texas Tech looks ahead to the 21st century with a new Campus Master Plan that honors as its foundation the William Ward Watkin design. New academic buildings and research facilities will support scholarly development, and new residence halls will enhance quality of life for students. But the Master Plan also reflects our understanding that human growth and learning are enhanced by an enriched environment; beauty in the art and landscape that surround us nourishes and stimulates the spirit. With this in mind, the Camps Car Givers committee had been entrusted by the Texas Tech Board of Regents with implementing a plan to bring landscaping and public art to the campuses of Texas Tech. Committee members all share the goal of making Texas Tech University and Texas Tech University Health Science Center the most beautiful campuses for higher education in the Southwest, and all are dedicated to advancing a landscape and public are projects plan that will celebrate human achievement, stimulate creativity and foster the highest level of scholarship. In support of the mission of the Campus Care Givers, Texas Tech is pleased to present the 1998 Texas Tech Commemorative Christmas Ornament. Proceeds from the sale of each ornament will benefit the Campus Care Givers Fund, providing financing for a variety of campus landscape and public art projects. Opened in the fall, the United Spirit Arena has become a landmark of the new Campus Master Plan. That plan honors the original design concept of campus buildings in the Spanish Renaissance style as a tribute to the Spanish influence in southwestern history. Although the interior of the United Spirit Arena features the finest state-of-the-art technology, the exterior, with its red tile roof, cut stone, bell tower and graceful arches, is a reflection of the grandeur of the original Texas Tech architecture. Seating 15,020, the United Spirit Arena is home to the Red Raiders Basketball team, the Lady Raiders Basketball team and the Lady Raiders Volleyball team. The arena also serves as the site for Texas Tech Commencement Exercises and is the largest venue on the South Plains for concerts and other cultural events. The arena is named in honor of United Supermarkets of Lubbock. This corporation made the first and largest gift to fund the $60 million structure, built entirely with private and non-appropriated funds. In addition to housing offices for the sports teams who play there, the arena also features an Athletic Academic Hall of Fame, a Double T Store for campus and sports memorabilia, a 2,000 square foot meeting room, catering kitchen, weight and training facilities, team physician’s office, practice court, and press area wired for live television broadcasts. Twenty-four suites for Texas Tech supporters ring the main court area. After the selection of the Matadors as the school mascot and of the scarlet and black as the school colors to represent the matador’s red cape and black costume, the stage was set. In 1936, George Tate, the unofficial “first” Masked Rider, shocked football fans when he led the football team onto the field and then fled quickly. After appearing sporadically in the ensuing years, the Masked Rider, one of the most impressing university mascots in the nation, surfaced again on January 1, 1954 at the Gator Bowl. Joe Kirk Fulton rode into history on a horse named Blackie as the first official Masked Rider. Ed Danforth, a writer for the Atlanta Journal and a press box spectator later wrote “No team in any bowl game ever made a more sensational entrance.” This spectacular tradition now transcends football games. Thirty-nine men and women to date have thrilled fans while traveling more than 15,000 miles a year to attend parades, rodeos, and other events in addition to football games. From its humble beginning – a borrowed horse and a homemade cape – to the stellar program it is today, the Masked Rider is uniquely Texas Tech. Red Raider fans and foes alike continue to marvel at the Masked Rider. Those who ride know they represent not only current students, but also all who came before them. They symbolize one of the most noble and glamorous traditions alive today – not just at Texas Tech, but at any university. In October of 2001, the National Board of Directors of the Texas Tech Ex-Student Association voted officially to change its name to the Texas Tech Alumni Association, effective February 8, 2002. This change had been contemplated for many years. After a great deal of study and input from thousands of alumni, the name change was made official. In addition, a new logo was adopted. This “new look” was patterned after the attractive statue of the Masked Rider located in the Frazier Alumni Plaza on campus. The Alumni Association had been a vital part of campus life since its inception in 1927, in conjunction with Tech’s first graduating class. Over the years, the Alumni Association has supported the academic mission of the university. Academic scholarships, professorships, support for the libraries on campus and many other special needs have been met, thanks to the Association and its members. Today, the Alumni Association boasts over 23,000 members worldwide. Membership includes a subscription to The Texas Techsan Magazine, published six times per year. This quality publication is the best way for alumni and friends of Tech to get the most complete Tech news and information. Alumni chapters are located throughout the world. These local groups provide Tech friends and fan a chance to gather, have fun and support the university. In addition, Tech alumni are also encouraged to register on the Association’s Web site, free of charge, at www.techsan.org. The name Saddle Tramps came from the stories of Passersby who traveled to farms, stayed for a brief time to make repairs, and then moved on to the next farm. With this in mind, Lamb had the idea he would like to make improvements to the university during his time at Texas Tech before graduating and moving on and thus, the Saddle Tramps were born. The Saddle Tramps is rooted in tradition. These traditions include wrapping Will Rogers and Soap Suds, called “Midnight Raiders,” before football games and hosting a pep-rally immediately following the wrapping, ringing the Victory Bells after Red Raider sporting victories, forming the Bell Circle before football and baseball games, and ringing “Bangin Bertha” at football games following TTU touchdowns. The original “Bangin Bertha” bell was donated to the Saddle Tramps by the Santa Fe Railroad in 1959 and designed by former Saddle Tramp, Joe Winegar. The Saddle Tramps also provide tours of the bell tower to campus visitors, participate annually in parades, the homecoming bonfire, and the Carol of Lights. Around 1971, the Southwest Conference created a rule forbidding live animal mascots at away games unless the host school permitted it. Since the Masked Rider's horse might have been prohibited from attending some games under this rule, Jim Gaspard, a member of the Texas Tech Saddle Tramps student spirit organization and the first Raider Red, created the original Raider Red design as an alternate mascot. In the first Raider Red costume, Gaspard used paper mache to create Raider Red’s head. The design was based on a character created by Lubbock, Texas, cartoonist and former mayor Dirk West. This milestone moment in history was celebrated as a tribute to the countless students, faculty, staff, and alumni that have made Texas Tech University one of the premier institutions of higher education in the world. This year’s ornament features the centennial logo placed in front of the Administration Building; the first building constructed on campus. The ornament also features the official university mascots, the Masked Rider and Raider Red. Texas Tech was founded on February 10, 1923, as Texas Technological College by the Texas Legislature and Governor Pat Neff. After settling on Lubbock as its location later that year, the university officially opened its doors in the fall of 1925 to 910 students that came to pursue studies in the liberal arts, home economics, agriculture, and engineering. Texas Tech held its first commencement in 1927 with a graduating class of 26 students. Mary Dale Buckner won a drawing that was held to determine what graduating student would be the first to receive a diploma from Texas Tech. Over the course of its first century, the university added a medical school, law school, and veterinary school while increasing its student population to more than 40,000 students. Along with an official name change to Texas Tech University in 1969, Texas Tech has competed at the highest levels of intercollegiate athletics, earned a Carnegie tier one “very high research activity” distinction and is recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) by the United States Department of Education. The university celebrated its centennial with a year-long celebration in 2023 that began with the Carol of Lights on December 2, 2022, and concluded with the Carol of Lights on December 1, 2023. More than 40 celebratory events were held over the course of the year in Lubbock, Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and New York City. The celebrations drew record crowds and participation from students, faculty, staff, and alumni in pursuit of a goal of one million hours of volunteerism and service.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0748/2785/7998/files/2023_353da4ab-46da-4f31-87aa-9799c30e73bc.jpg?v=1788883397
2001-texas-tech™-ornament
2001 Texas Tech™ Ornament

West Texas is known for its beautiful starry nights, and it is also known for special lights during the month of December. The Carol of Lights is one of the most revered and well-known traditions at Texas Tech. Students, alumni and friends of the university have been enjoying the Christmas lights tat have illuminated campus buildings since 1958. Although the 2001 season will be the 43rd annual Carol of Lights, there have actually only been 42. The ceremony was cancelled in 1972 because of the university’s energy conservation policy. In the 1950s, students began the tradition of gathering at Memorial Circle to sing Christmas carols and drink hot chocolate. The event to celebrate the lights officially began in 1959 with 5,000 lights. Today, more than 25,000 red, white and orange lights make up the spectacular display. The event was first called the Carol of Lights in 1961. This event, sponsored by the Residence Halls Association, has grown to include more than 20,000 people who come to hear the Texas Tech choir and to watch as the flip of a switch turns the night aglow. Students wanted a song that could spur their football team to victory, or cause a crowd to stand up and yell when hearing it. They wanted a war song that could be played at games, pep rallies, and even dances - a song that would tell the world that Texas Tech was present and going strong. This caused the Texas Tech Chamber of Commerce to offer $25 to the person who submitted the best new song for the college. The Texas Tech Chamber of Commerce was an organization of men with sophomore standing, or better, whose purpose was to foster a spirit of cooperation among students, faculty, business and the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce in promoting the best interests of Tech. The new song was to be one that embodied the spirit of the institution and this section of Texas - one that was full of meaning and fight! Words and music were to be submitted together. Students were encouraged to remember that regardless of how well the entries that were submitted sounded at the present time, the future years were important as well. The song selected would receive additional meaning as time passed. Tradition would add much to its meaning. In 1930, R.C. Marshall's composition of the "Matador Song" was selected. Marshall, a transfer student from Hillsboro Junior College, was editor of the La Ventana in 1930-1931. However, there was a controversy over the similarity of the melody of the new song to the Notre Dame Fight song. To resolve the controversy, Harry LaMaire, Tech band director from 1925-1934, composed new music, but he did not change any of the words. The new Matador song was unanimously adopted by the student body at a convocation held the last week in February 1931. The Toreador reported that the new song went over with a bang. Students were pleased with it. Jack Durham, the football captain, was quoted saying, "It's something we can call our own."

The 2004 Official Texas Tech Ornament is finished in 14-carat gold and is a replica of the university's seal in a red and black, velour-lined gift box.
