The Carol of Lights is one of the most revered and well-known traditions at Texas Tech. Students, alumni and friends of the university have been enjoying the Christmas lights tat have illuminated campus buildings since 1958. Although the 2001 season will be the 43rd annual Carol of Lights, there have actually only been 42. The ceremony was cancelled in 1972 because of the university’s energy conservation policy. In the 1950s, students began the tradition of gathering at Memorial Circle to sing Christmas carols and drink hot chocolate. The event to celebrate the lights officially began in 1959 with 5,000 lights. Today, more than 25,000 red, white and orange lights make up the spectacular display. The event was first called the Carol of Lights in 1961. This event, sponsored by the Residence Halls Association, has grown to include more than 20,000 people who come to hear the Texas Tech choir and to watch as the flip of a switch turns the night aglow.
